Asia’s 1st Content Marketing Summit CMS Asia 2014 is to be Held at New Delhi on 31st Jan and 1st Feb 2014. In a first-of-its-kind event in this part of the world, Content Marketing Summit Asia 2014 aims to bring some of the greatest minds, savvy brands, renowned publishers, innovative technology enablers and leading practitioners from across the world come together to explore the exciting world of content marketing.
Content Marketing Summit is backed by Singapore-based Asia Content Marketing Association (ACMA). The summit’s advisory board includes top executives from big names like Adobe, GroupM, Yahoo, Godfrey Philips India, Chicco India, The 120 Media Collective, HMH Publishing and Sirez Group among others.
Umang Bedi, Managing Director - South Asia, Adobe & Advisory Board Member of CMS Asia comments, “If content is at the heart of what you do, you must recognize the importance of marketing it right. The playing field for marketers has not only widened tremendously, but is changing and evolving. There is no standard playbook to ensure success because content marketing is both a science and an art. A platform like CMS Asia will give you the opportunity to not only understand the science behind content marketing, but also listen to and interact with industry experts and see the art behind it.”
CMS Asia is aimed at spreading knowledge about content marketing. While Day 1 of the summit will have renowned speakers from across the world share their knowledge, ideas, and experiences; Day 2 is reserved for workshops.
“Most conferences and summits stop at enlightening. But with CMS Asia, we want that enlightenment or wisdom gained to translate into action. A day dedicated to practical workshops is all about that. We at ACMA (Asia Content Marketing Association) are excited about this, as it’s a much-needed initiative in this part of the world,” says Vaasu Gavarasana, Co-founder of ACMA & APAC Business Head of Yahoo.
The motto of Content Marketing Summit Asia is succinctly summed up in three words:
Share - Knowledge and ideas by thought leaders and practitioners
Connect - Marketers, publishers, content creators and technology enablers
Act - Translate learning into actionable steps through workshops
According to the brains behind the summit, it’s time brand marketers, publishing firms and content creators step out of their cocoons, come together, and find ways to work with each other and leverage each other’s strengths.
“While the discipline of content marketing itself isn’t anything new, the rapid expansion of digital media and the growing clout of social media have altered Content Marketing in unexpected ways. This metamorphosis presents exciting new opportunities for brands, publishers, agency partners and independent creators alike,” says Vijay Simha Vellanki, Co-Founder of Kontent CafĂ, the organization behind CMS Asia.

Must Watch This
After seeing the making of the film, you might ask "Why??", but this is pretty insane stuff! I remember a similar effect achieved in those Popeye cartoons where the backgrounds were miniature sets and the animation was on cell. I don't think they had laser cutting back then!

Many of us have grown up reading Comics of our favorite superheroes or characters in our youth. These characters continue to serve as our role models and we take inspiration and draw strength from these virtual superheroes in our day to day life. Chacha Chaudhary with its sheer wit and intelligence, has entertained millions of fans. Nagraj, Super Commando Dhruv and Doga are the role models of almost all kids who grew up in late 80’s and 90’s. Bahadur, Tausi, Crookbond have a huge nostalgic fan following. Amar Chitra Katha has single handedly contributed in persevering and promoting our cultural heritage by passing on the mythological stories and the folk tales to the youth of our country for the last several decades. Comics is the cornerstone of the art of visual storytelling. All other mediums of entertainment like Animation, Films, Gaming build upon the fundamental craft of Comics making to expand them into new dimensions.
Besides entertainment, Comics also helps as a very important tool for those learning a new language. A vast majority of readers from North eastern states and southern parts of our country as well as in neighboring countries like Nepal have learnt Hindi just by reading Hindi Comics alone.

Dhoom:3 The Game: For iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, and BlackBerry 10 platforms
Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif have launched ‘Dhoom:3 The Game’, the official mobile game of the upcoming Bollywood action-thriller ‘Dhoom:3’.
In the game, players play as the movie’s central character (played by Aamir Khan) races his superbike through the streets of Chicago while evading the chasing police (played by Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra). The game is available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, and BlackBerry 10 platforms as well as on Nokia feature phones.
At the launch event held at YRF studios in Mumbai, Aamir Khan was the first person to play the game. His gameplay was projected live on a large screen for the audience to watch. Even though Aamir is known not to be a gamer, yet he did go on to prove that he possesses some quick reflexes. He instinctively took to the game’s tilt controls and raced his own virtual avatar through the obstacle-filled roadway. In the end Aamir achieved a score of 9499, a challenging target for any player to beat.
Next, it was Katrina’s turn. She took some time to get the hang of the bike, but soon she surprised everyone with an eruption of agility. She glided her bike through the traffic and ended her run with a competitive score of 4911.
After their gaming session, Aamir and Katrina both appreciated the game. Aamir revealed that while he was not involved in the development of the game, he is pleased to personally experience that the final outcome matches the level of quality he would like to be associated with. Katrina said that she enjoyed playing the game and now looks forward to downloading it on her phone to play more.
Gamers around the world seem to agree with Aamir and Katrina. ‘Dhoom:3 The Game’ had premiered exclusively on the Windows Phone Store on 25th October, and subsequently on Nokia (Ovi) Store. The game had clocked over a million downloads in just 20 days of the limited release. It is now one of the fastest ‘made in India’ games to hit the 10-lac figure. Currently the game is pegged at 1.7 million downloads, with an average 4.5/5 user rating. And now with Aamir and Katrina opening the racetrack for gamers on all other platforms, including iOS and Android, the game’s virality is only bound to increase.
“By the time the Dhoom:3 movie releases on 20 December, we are hopeful to cross the 1 crore downloads mark,” said Rohith Bhat, CEO of 99Games Online, the game’s developer. “We took 6 months to complete the game, with 18 people working on it. We take pride in the fact that the game has been completely made in India, from ideation to execution.”
Sharing exclusively with AnimationXpress.com, Rohith elaborates more on the game by saying “It’s very easy to play the game but difficult to master it, we’ve made sure to make the game addictive so that the user keeps on playing it end number of times to master the skills”!
“It was jointly decided by YRF and us to develop a racing game. The prime challenge was to build the game in four months time as the initial two months were spent on conceptualizing the game play. The game is 32 levels and free on all platforms. Also, we have a multi game deal planned with YRF.” Adds further
With ‘Dhoom:3 The Game’ rapidly amassing positive reviews from users and critics alike, it has established itself as the new benchmark of success for all future Bollywood-based mobile games.
ABAI Fest 2013: 6th and 7th Dec at the University of Mysore.
Strong fusion of film and digital arts will enchant the audiences at ABAI Fest 2013 slated on 6th and 7th December at the University of Mysore.
So which luminaries of the Indian and International Animation Industry will be gracing the fest? We hear this from Biren Ghose- President of ABAI as he starts off a conversation with AnimationXpress.com by saying ‘If you work at it, its production, if you watch it, its recreation, if you experience it its fun. If you miss out on seeing it it’s a sin!’
The idea of the fest looks interesting with showcase of movies from around the globe?
ABAI Fest 2013 is “Showcasing the Impossible”! The best animation studios in the world all started to showcase their prowess through ‘short’ films and the ‘culture’ of short form storytelling will also revolutionize and scale our Asian/Indian animation and CG production industry. The Festival is all about screening short form and long form animation and the only exhibits are those that provide the allied contents such as merchandise, games, apps etc. which contribute to the brand building of animated titles.
Can you unveil the detailed line up of the fest?
We are presenting Ron Diamond – a member of the Academy of Motion Picture from Hollywood to showcase the best content in two capsules-”The Giants 1st Steps” which traces the career growth of the world renowned director from their very first film and the “Show of Shows” [now in its 15th year] which will be a terrific inspiration to young film makers. Shelley Page from DreamWorks Animation will also be featuring her “Shelley’s Eye Candy Show” a collection of the best from the European scene. Shelley is an eminent artist (Roger Rabbit; Shrek; Madagascar; Kung Fu Panda), a juror [across thecreme de la creme of animation schools in Europe] and an educator – she has the eye and the aesthetic to search for the world’s best emerging talent and is an outreach professional ‘parexcellance’. We are also working on special package from Annecy, the world’s gold standard of animated film festivals and an amazing festival venue to which ABAI has turned to for mentorship and an exchange of festival content to build the India ‘screenings’ habit.

VFX has become the turbo power for live action film making, ABAI is working to curate a special compendium of the best of live-action motion picture Visual Effects that represents the power of CG in innovating images with creatures, environments, characters and action. Some of the best computer games of 2012-13 have been created utilizing Indian talent – the classic example of the arts and assets of Grand Theft Auto V [the largest selling game of all time in just its 1st few weeks]; Tomb Raider and other colossal titles cannot be left out of any media and entertainment showcase! The games presentation will include trailers and other cool stuff to showcase the best examples arising from the “combination of technology and creativity”.
Any other interesting aspects that would be focused on
The AVGC industry is becoming a game changer for the advertising and brand communication industries; we will show case the best in class ideas and execution in this area. India has recently partnered and swept the international awards for VFX and these award winning shorts and a snippet of how they are made will be a special feature of the festival.

Finally, the comic book industry is jumping out of its traditional hand drawn avatar with its conventional 20+ page ‘staple bound’ conventional format and transforming into the realm of ‘digitally delivered’ graphic novels. Come watch this syndrome and become one of the early bird few thousand people to be gifted an ABAI “festival special” created by the most famous comic/animation character creator on the planet.
What influenced you to choose these movies and experts for the fest?
We have been working with animation critics and professionals to choose what will jump out of the screen and into your hearts and minds. The current AVGC market has lunged forward off the starting blocks and begun the global marathon. This fest will help to keep the focus and positive energy till the industry crosses the ‘finish line’. (Our Motto: ‘Don’t sprint the marathon!’ It will take few annual ABAI Fest to bring India onto the final podium).

What is your primary vision with this fest?
We want this to become a major international animation, VFX and Gaming art festival on the annual global events calendar and engage, excite, motivate and convert more people to the AVGC genre.
We want this to become a major international animation, VFX and Gaming art festival on the annual global events calendar and engage, excite, motivate and convert more people to the AVGC genre.
Can we have your comments on the current Indian Animation and VFX Market and how will this fest contribute to it?
Currently the animation and VFX market is approximately 1% of the world market; the festival is a key strategic initiative to increase the awareness with regard to the role of digital production technology in audio visual storytelling. Hence while there is opportunity and head room to grow, we need to have wide ranging skills development to meet this challenge.

How would you define creative content?
The AVGC business is about “Crafting visual experiences” across multiple screens – cinema, TV, video game consoles, mobile phones, I Pad/ tablet, etc. Any form of storytelling =creative content!

In the press note issued by ABAI, you’ve mentioned that ‘computer graphics (CG) in digital production is now the new norm in filmmaking’- Can you elaborate more on this?
Stories don’t change with time, however, packaging does! The evolution of new technology in Audio visual arts and sciences has been a constantly evolving paradigm over the last 80 years. The advent of computer graphics and digital technology in the production management and delivery of content has radically impacted and enhanced storytelling creation and consumption. ABAI Fest will annually showcase the latest in this progression.
Are you inviting Indian Studios also to participate in the fest?
ABAI Fest is an open invitation to all participants in the industry. Over time the whole world will get to know about it. Obviously, we will take cognizance of the India/ Asia content community.
I suppose an attendee can have a one on one interaction with the speakers at the fest and does one need to register?
Yes you have to register (including on the spot) and the entrance fee will not be greater than INR 100.You get to interact only if you are very lucky! Our Attendee: Speaker ratio is likely to be 1:300!
Will you continue this fest in several other cities of India? It would be great if you do!

UTV Motion Pictures has announced the release of the biggest blockbusters of all-time – SHOLAY in 3D for 3rd Jan 2014.
UTV Motion Pictures has announced the release of the biggest blockbusters of all-time – SHOLAY in 3D for 3rd Jan 2014. The indomitable writer-duo Salim and Javed Akhtar unveiled the 3D trailer and were overwhelmed by the stupendous response. Maya Digital Studios worked on the 2D to 3D conversion of the film providing an entirely new viewing experience to audiences.
“It’s been an honor and pleasure to convert Sholay into 3D. Sasha Sippy, the producer of the film wanted to enhance the magic of this film, and make sure that it continues to reign supreme in the heart of film lovers, even in the years to come. It was precisely then that I suggested the idea of converting Sholay into 3D”, says Ketan Mehta, MD, Maya Digital Studios and one of India’s most internationally acclaimed directors.
“Sholay is my love. I started my career in 1989. At that time there used to be lines of people wanting to buy the video cassette of Sholay. When the film released in 1975 there was a long que outside the theatres to buy tickets. It ran for over 5 years house full. I have been licensing various rights of Sholay from 1995 till date and I’ll never forget what the film has given me” adds Jayantilal Gada, Chairman, Pen India Pvt. Ltd.
“I am very grateful to the unmatched creative and technical team that was involved in making the original film, which has given me the opportunity to be a part of making history again. This is the first time in the world a 38 year old film has been upgraded, converted into 3D and the sound remixed in Dolby Atmos. A special thanks to everyone that has made this possible. I am honoured to be a part of being able to give back what people regard as the one of the greatest films in history, now with the best that technology has to offer”, says Shaan Utamsingh, Producer G.P. Sippy’s partner in Sholay Media & Entertainment.
This conversion is made using Stereoscopic 3D. There are two ways of making 3D films, either shoot them in 3D with latest technology dedicated cameras for 3D shooting, which are available today; or else convert a film shot in 2D into 3D to have the three dimensional experience. 3D gives a more real, life-like experience of viewing the film. It creates an illusion where one feels like one is actually sitting on location experiencing a ‘live’ performance. So the viewers are more involved with the film viewing process. And with elements of the film coming out, 3D makes such film viewing a more engaging, interactive experience
Sharing about the major challenges, Ketan Mehta, MD, Maya Digital Studios highlights, “Conversion of a film like Sholay from 2D to 3D comes with a lot of challenges, both technical & creative. The difficult level is that one second of filmed footage is 24 frames, and the length of the film is 198 minutes. So essentially, the 2D to 3D conversion of Sholay meant conversion of 285120 frames, from 2D to 3D”
” We are honored to be associated with the film and are confident that SHOLAY in 3D will make us fall in love with the film all over again”, says Gaurav Verma, Director – India Theatrical Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV.
